Merchant Accounts

Why are the rates for a retail merchant account lower than all the other merchant accounts?

A retail merchant account generally processes credit cards when the customer is present with the credit card. The bank or processor classifies these transactions as the lowest level of risk in credit card processing since the customer is present with the credit card and the customer’s identification and signature can be verified. When a credit card is taken over the telephone, the merchant is assuming a higher level of risk that the transaction may be fraudulent since they can not verify the signature or identification of the customer. Due to this level of risk, the processor or bank charges higher fees to cover this type of exposure.

RETAIL MERCHANT ACCOUNT
A retail merchant account is an account that is set-up to accept credit cards as a form of payment for services rendered or products sold. In order for a merchant account to be considered a retail merchant account, the merchant must physically

swipe at least 80% of the credit card transactions thru the credit card terminal with the customer present.

A retail merchant account has the lowest rates so a merchant should consider this type of merchant account if they know that the majority of their customers will be presenting their credit cards at the store or terminal for swiping. If you are unsure that you will be able to obtain the 80% swiped transactions, then you should consider an internet merchant account or a mail order merchant account. If you key in a transaction on a retail merchant account, you will be charged more for the transaction because it will not qualify as a retail merchant account transaction (swiped transaction).
